I feel bad for Haas. He retired after losing the first two sets to Benoit Paire in the first round.
Reporter: “What was the reason for the retirement?”
Haas: “You know, I felt like physically I was empty. I didn’t have anything left in the tank, to be quite honest. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced it that way before in my career playing any matches. And it didn’t feel good. You know, I just felt shortness of breath. Couldn’t really focus. That’s not a good thing.”
A Tennis Integrity Unit (why does that make me laugh every time?) banned Alexandru-Daniel Carpen for life. Good ole Romania! I guess there’s bad apples even in the best of the apple trees.
One should not be surprised, however. Says the TSU (had to abbreviate and am still laughing):
Whaaa? Tommy Haas got a wildcard at the 2017 Australian open.
I do like Haas and remember seeing and meeting him at the Memphis open a LONG time ago. But, really? He is 38 years old and didn’t play a single pro match in 2016.
Petrova decided to retire after almost 20 years of playing on the tour.
The 34-year-old Russian had not played on the WTA Tour since 2014 after failing to shake off a torn muscle in her shoulder and a number of other injuries.
Stop the presses! Serena Williams, 35, is seen here with new fiance Alexis Ohanian, 33. He’s Reddit’s co-founder. Don’t know what Reddit is? It’s “the front page of the internet.”
Serena made the engagement public through a poem posted on Reddit. For your reading pleasure, we obtained a copy of it:
Ana Ivanovic won Roland Garros in 2008 plus 14 other WTA titles.
She blames repeated injuries for her play level declining.
Last year she married German football stud World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger.
I don’t watch much tennis even though I do love watching it. I just don’t get to.
However, I make time to watch at least parts of the end of the year biggie, the ATP World Tour Finals.
